In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky because there are two connector pins and they serve different purposes but the most effective way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading about 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine with no sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.

However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I don't know what to do. I think I've ruled everything else out. I'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to be aware of the position and speed the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these sensors go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox or a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, and/or an unfire when in gear. It is probable that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. They are cheap and easy-to-find especially if they're a Bosch model like ours. Alternately, GM's version this component is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind many issues with your car. It's an essential component of the transmission of your audi key blade, as it transmits information to the ECU about how fast or slow the engine is turning. When this sensor fails, it could affect the performance of the transmission as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It sends an electrical signal through a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to control fuel, timig, and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should see around 1000 ohms of resistance between those points.
